Rooms and light groups

Create a group, control several lights and recognise a partial result.

For: Residents; creating and editing groups requires an administrator · Updated September 2026

01

Choose a practical purpose for the group

A light group lets you control several lights with one action. Examples include Living room reading lights or Downstairs ambience. A group can contain lights from one room or several rooms. The same light may belong to more than one group.

On a connected Core, these are the same groups used in the existing Core management environment. They are stored centrally and appear on other signed-in screens. In the demo, groups are saved only in this browser’s sample home; no commands are sent to real lights.

02

Create the group as an administrator

On a connected Core, you select available Hue lights. Start with two known, reachable lights to check the selection and joint behaviour before assembling a larger group.

  1. Open Rooms > Light groups > Create light group.
  2. Give the group a recognisable name.
  3. Choose its associated room or Multiple rooms.
  4. Search lights by name or filter by room. Select individual lights, an entire room or all visible lights.
  5. Check the selection and choose Save group. A group can contain up to 100 lights.
All visible lights refers to the current search and filter results. Check the final selection before saving.
03

Use the card and expanded controls

The group card shows how many lights are on and the average brightness of reachable lights. Different states and unavailable lights remain identifiable. The average does not mean every light is at exactly that brightness.

  1. Use All on or All off for the group.
  2. Adjust brightness with the slider.
  3. Open the group for brightness presets, white temperature, colour and individual light states.
  4. For white temperature and colour, check how many lights support the selected function.
A group containing ordinary white and colour lights does not give the ordinary lights additional capabilities. Only supported settings are offered and applied.
04

Wait for each light’s result

An accepted group command is not yet a confirmed light state. Core reports the result for each light and waits for a new observation. With partial failure, you can see which lights responded and which did not.

Suppose one of three lights has no power. The reachable lights may respond while the third is skipped. Restore its power and check the current state before operating the group again. The old command is not saved for later or automatically repeated.

Unsupported settings are also skipped. Inspect the individual results instead of assuming that a single group average proves everything succeeded.

05

Edit or remove an existing group

Open the group and choose Edit group to change its name, room and light selection. A light that can no longer be found remains visible in an existing group until you remove it from the selection yourself. Membership therefore does not disappear unnoticed.

  1. Check which lights should remain and update the selection.
  2. Save the change and review the group again.
  3. If a simultaneous change is reported, reopen the current group and check its updated contents before repeating your edit.
  4. To remove the group, check its name and confirm once. Only the group disappears; its lights remain.
06

Understand why a group may be missing

Administrators create and edit light groups. Other residents see a group only if they may view every light it contains. Control requires permission to operate every light in the group. A group never grants additional room access.

If an administrator adds a light from a private room, the group may disappear for another resident. In that case, check the full light selection and permissions before trying to create the group again.

07

Check your first group in practice

Test on/off and brightness with two visible lights. Then open the same group on a second signed-in screen: its name and members should match. If only the appearance differs, check screen settings.

For a missing group, check the Core address and account first. For a partial result, open the individual lights and restore their reachability. If errors persist, record the group name, affected lights and the message for each light.
